New Non-Hormonal Drug Offers Hope for Women
Hot flushes and night sweats are some of the most common and frustrating symptoms women experience during menopause. For many years, most treatments used hormones, but not everyone wants or can take them. Because of this, researchers have been looking for safe, non-hormonal ways to help women manage these symptoms and improve day-to-day comfort.
One newer option is Fezolinetant, sold under the brand name Veozah, which was approved in 2023 to help reduce hot flushes. In 2026 its now available via the NHS and should help around 500,000 women who cannot take HRT. Instead of using hormones, it works by calming the signals in the brain that can trigger sudden changes in body temperature. This helps lower how often hot flushes and night sweats happen, and many women in studies reported noticeable improvement within the first few weeks.
Any Side Effects?
Like all medicines, it can have side effects. The most common ones reported are headaches, tiredness, or feeling a bit unwell, which are usually mild. However, there are some more serious symptoms that need medical attention. Women taking this medicine should contact their GP straight away if they experience persistent nausea or vomiting, loss of appetite, severe stomach pain, yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, unusual fatigue, or signs of an allergic reaction such as swelling of the face, rash, dizziness, or difficulty breathing. These symptoms can sometimes signal a problem with the liver or a strong reaction to the medicine, so it’s important to get medical advice quickly if they occur.
Who Benefits?
Fezolinetant is now available in the UK via the NHS for women experiencing moderate to severe menopause hot flushes and night sweats, particularly if hormone therapy isn’t suitable or desired. It’s an exciting new option for women who want effective relief without taking hormones. If hot flushes or night sweats are affecting your quality of life, speak to your GP to see if this non-hormonal treatment could be right for you.
